Hiraeth (1).png

Running a race without a finish line, trying to fit in in this lifeless world,
Oh, home, my perfect paradise. Does it even exist in this chaos?

Inspired by the surreal works of David Lynch, the current rise of fascism and the treatment of immigrants, I express my self-story through this work. The Welsh word Hiraeth (pronounced HEER-eyeth) means a deep, bittersweet melancholic longing, nostalgia, or yearning for a home, place, or time that may no longer exist or never existed at all. This word perfectly encapsulates what I expressed through my work.

Hiraeth is an installation of two videos: Journey//hope of finding home and comforting nostalgia, comforting envy. Journey is a search for a perfect home, and that comfort and belonging you’ve been longing for forever; whereas, comforting nostalgia, comforting envy is a video exploring past discomfort, nostalgia in the bitterness, moments of comparing oneself with other migratory beings, such as birds and ethereal celestial beings, such as the moon and finding home in them. The blend of poetry and piano sound coexisting in these videos adds an extra layer to the height of the emotions experienced during the creative process. With this work, I aim to bring more light to the current political situation and solidarity amongst people. Along with that, I also want the audience to think through their own relationship with their idea of “home”.
